Igor – Family Movie Review

The Kingdom of Malaria, under the rule of King Malbert (Jay Leno), is the most evil city in the world. Evil scientists are welcomed there to create their evil inventions freely. Each year heralds the Evil Science Fair, where all the inventions duke it out. Standing beside each evil scientist is their igor, a faithful, yet idiotic, sidekick. But one igor dreams of being more than just the sidekick–he wants to invent too. He soon discovers that being evil isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

If you think that plot line seems a little flat, you’re right. As is the entire film. Even with a theater full of kids, Igor failed to receive one laugh in the allotted hour and a half. It took three writers to hash out the yawn-inducing script, and you can tell. Not one original and truly creative thought is manifested in the film. But the writing isn’t the only thing stinking up the screen. The director seems to lack imaginative…well…direction. He uses dialogue to tell us what is going on rather than using the animation to show us. Nothing is fully believable. We just have to take his word for it. And as if that wasn’t bad enough, the big name cast seemed to have “phoned in” their parts. The dialogue is not engaging, nor do the characters seem to be truly speaking to each other. As the main character, Igor, John Cusack’s lines sound as though he is reading a story book aloud. Jennifer Coolidge’s voice of the character, Heidi, made me cringe. And it’s a shame to hear Steve Buscemi’s terrific, unique voice reduced to such a B-rate script. Molly Shannon, however, gives a great voice performance as Eva, Igor’s evil invention.

PROS

The writers did manage to throw in a few great morals for our kids in the sub-par plot. Igor proudly proclaims at the end of the film, “Everyone has an evil bone in their body, but it’s up to us whether or not we use it.” And Eva teaches Igor that, “It’s better to be a good nobody than an evil somebody.”

CONS

Parents should be aware that there are some mildly scary images and themes. Scamper (Steve Buscemi) is always trying to find ways to kill himself. This suicide mentality is supposed to arouse laughter, but it borders on offensive. The entire purpose of the Kingdom of Malaria is to invent monsters that terrorize and kill people. Although the film does a good job of showing what is considered “good” and “evil,” evil is mostly depicted as a funny thing, not something to truly fear, but rather something to laugh about. There are several crude remarks such as damn-it, shut your cake hole, etc. One character refuses to wear pants in public, but thinks it’s okay since he is invisible. At one point he scratches his “invisible butt.” King Malbert says he would like to rub someone’s face in “number two.”

As far as sexuality, the film has many disturbing sexual themes. Evil scientist, Dr. Schadenfreude (Eddie Izzard), and his girlfriend, Jaclyn (Jennifer Coolidge), treat each other terribly and say awful things to each other. For example, Dr. Schadenfreude calls Jaclyn a “shallow evil wretch.” Their hateful dialogue is often coupled with sexual tension, often ending in kissing scenes that will make you squirm in your seat. The animators also include suggestive apparel for many of the female characters, especially a very low cut dress for Heidi.

OVERALL

Tip: Do not attend this film if you are the least bit tired. Igor will put you straight to sleep.

WALL-E – Family Movie Review

700 years from now, Earth has become so overrun with garbage and waste that the human population has retreated to a massive spaceship, orbiting somewhere in the galaxy. Generation after generation, the humans await to return to Earth when it is able to sustain life once more. Meanwhile, WALL-E, a Waste Allocation Load Lifter – Earth Class, is the last robot on earth that is still performing his duty of cleaning the planet–all because he has acquired a personality, akin to the old film Short Circuit. Along with his trusty friend, a cockroach, WALL-E scavenges towering skyscrapers of trash for little treasures that he adds to a collection similar to Ariel’s in The Little Mermaid. But when a new robot, named Eve, arrives on Earth, she not only turns WALL-E’s world upside down, she also becomes his most treasured discovery of all.

Disney-Pixar has done something ingenious–they created a character that was beloved even before WALL-E hit theaters. It seemed that everywhere I went, kids were mimicking WALL-E’s voice. They just couldn’t wait to meet him. One of the little girls sitting near me called out, “WALL-E! WALL-E!” and waved at him when he appeared on screen. I have to admit, I was just as excited as she was. And even though pre-mature excitement usually wears off in the first half hour of any anticipated film, WALL-E delivers a full hour and a half of supreme story-telling. Pixar has proven that they can show more emotion in two seconds of animation than most films can in two hours. They’ve also proven that you don’t need a star-studded voice cast to make a great animated film. Even though WALL-E is the same length as Kung Fu Panda, I felt as though it was too short–I just couldn’t help wanting more of WALL-E and Eve. Perhaps I’ll just have to go see it again!

PROS

Because there is very little dialogue, some might think that the pace is slow. But like Tom Hanks’ Cast Away, not all films require non-stop speech. The gorgeous animation and musical score are captivating enough to fill in all the gaps.

Disney-Pixar has also embarked on two new territories for story-line. First, they have graduated to a level where they can successfully demonstrate unconditional and selfless love between two characters. WALL-E and Eve find that they are in love, not because it is convenient, but because they care so much for each other that they would sacrifice their own lives for the sake of the other. Never before has this kind of love been so beautifully portrayed in a Disney or Pixar film, in my opinion at least. WALL-E and Eve give us examples to live by, as well as a few tears in our eyes.

Second, WALL-E embraces the idea of Earth becoming a dystopia–laid waste by our greed and sloth. It seems that the human race sat idly by while the government made some pretty terrible decisions. Sitting idly is just about all the humans do onboard the spaceship Axiom, while they are brainwashed by the media tycoons from the corporation, Buy & Large. Although the theme is gentle, it begs the question, “What makes us human?” Is it solely our brain power? Or is it the combination of our minds and bodies that set us apart from other creatures? WALL-E will leave you and your children yearning to ride a bike, plant a flower garden, run through a field of daisies, or just simply feel the sun on your skin–remembering that there is beauty in what the human body can do as well.

CONS

Nothing negative can be said about WALL-E, but I will point out that the worst words mentioned are “heck” and “blasted.”

OVERALL

WALL-E is undoubtedly one of the best films of the year. On the big screen or on DVD, this little robot’s adventure will delight people of all ages.

Twilight – Family Movie Review

So the next stage of the best-selling book phenomenon has begun. Twilight has made it to the big screen. For those of you who do not know, it’s a classic tale of forbidden love, but with a monumental twist. Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) is a vampire, and Bella Swan’s (Kristen Stewart) blood is the sweetest he’s ever smelled. While falling hopelessly in love with her, he must learn to tame his burning desire to kill her. This kind of tension makes for a great story.

A great story, but not quite a great film.

No doubt audiences will be packed with teenage girls, but you’ll also find middle-aged women, as well as a few single guys checking out Twilight. If the theater is sold out, there is sure to be an energy there that you’ll be hard pressed to find with any other flick. Giggling, cheering, clapping, and swooning–be prepared to experience it all because die-hard fans will be filling the seats.

These fans will love seeing their beloved characters brought to life on the big screen, but Twilight is not much more than a dramatic reading of the book. The acting is B-rate, and the dialogue is simpering and shallow. The suave, dangerous but cool Edward Cullen makes an appearance for mere seconds and is then replaced with Robert Pattinson’s brooding and pouty version for most of the film. Kristen Stewart delivers nothing more than blank stares (which I think are supposed to be smoldering looks of passion?) and distressed huffs. I never quite believed that she was irrevocably in love with Edward. She liked him, yes. Was intrigued, yes. But in love with? Not a chance.

The effects budget is shamefully minimal and it shows. It is said that when the sunlight hits Edward’s skin that he dazzles Bella–he is so brilliant and beautiful that he looks like an angel. When the sunlight hits him in the film, however, he looks like he has some sort of scaly skin disease. The super-human powers the vampires possess were captivating on page, but on screen they just look stiff and odd.

It was hard for me to get used to the extreme close-up cinematography. Faces took up an entire half of the screen with towering foreheads. By the time you could focus in on what you were supposed to be seeing, the camera would pan away, which just left me frustrated. The pace of the script is erratic. At times it moves way too fast and sweeps over scenes that I was looking forward to. Other times it lingers on question and answer moments between Bella and Edward with slow, vacant dialogue. This movie told us what we needed to know. It never showed us.

PROS

Bella is pretty selfish throughout most of the film, she’s not even a very good friend, but she is willing to die to save her mother’s life. That’s got to be a pro, right?

Even though Bella and Edward barely kiss or hold hands, they love each other and would die for each other. To love someone that much before “trying them out” is almost unheard of in modern Hollywood films. It is an idea that young generations need to be exposed to.

Twilight also deals with divorce. Bella’s parents split up when she was young, and she has lived most of her life with her mother. Having to move to a completely new town and get used to a new house with a new set of rules is difficult, let alone the awkwardness of getting to know one of your parents all over again.

CONS

Just a heads up on the trailers at the beginning, a horror preview was shown at my particular theater. It was for the film The Unborn. The preview is not appropriate for younger audiences. Even I found it terrifying and had to look away several times.

I had minimal objections to this film, but here are a few things parents should be aware of:

One of Bella’s friends wags his butt at her in front of a diner window. When Bella tells her mother over the phone that she is interested in a boy, her mother asks her, “Are you being safe?” which alludes to her thinking it is okay for Bella to have sex as long as she uses protection. There is a brief kissing scene which in itself is pretty mild, however, Bella is wearing only a tee shirt and underwear at the time. Edward stays the night in her room, and Bella falls asleep on his chest. There is some violence but it is never bloody or gory. One of the “bad” vampires breaks Bella’s leg. Bella pulls a shard of glass from her leg. The Cullens rip the “bad” vampire’s head off (though you barely see it) and they burn his body. One of Bella’s friends, Jessica (Anna Kendrick), wears a few low cut tops and comments that a dress she is trying on “makes her boobs look good.”

OVERALL

Die-hard fans will be indulged, but those who haven’t read the book will find it dull and unoriginal.
